Philly Bike Events Calendar

I'm posting this update from the left bank of the Seine not far from the Champs-Élysées, where Steph and I watched Tadej Pogacar secure his fourth Tour de France win last weekend. On many roads in Paris, bikes outnumber cars. Women in dresses with multiple bags crank their pedals in six-inch heels. Parisian bikes are rarely fancy and their riders are rarely helmeted. Cycling here is a safe and practical utility that's embraced and encouraged. There are wide separated bike lanes, roads restricting cars, and bike parking everywhere.

Philadelphia has borrowed a lot of ideas from Paris. Our City Hall is an emblem of Second Empire architecture. The Ben Franklin Parkway, studded with world-class collections of French art, was directly inspired by the Champs-Élysées. The neighboring Beaux-Arts Parkway Central Library and Family Court buildings, just north of Logan Circle, are carbon copies of Place de la Concorde's Hôtel de Crillon and Hôtel de la Marine. Density, transit access, and the humble bicycle make it easy to travel through either city without a car.

Today, like a hundred years ago, we should be borrowing ideas from Paris.

• Coffee Outside | Coffee and bikes. 9:30am.
• Sunday Funday Gravel | Philly Gravel Club. Intermediate no-drop gravel. Dates alternate.
• Coffee Outside NJ | Bikes and coffee at Cooper River Park. First Sunday of the month.
• Hot Laps | Phixed Friday. Fast paced fixed gear peloton at the Navy Yard.
• Solidarity Ride Series | 10 miles protesting genocide in Palestine, all welcome. First Sunday of the month.

Last Saturday and first Sunday of each month: PMA Bike Ride | Feed Philly's hungry by bike. Volunteers and donations needed.
